POST RIDE Sunday September 27

It was wonderful waking up this morning not having to put on our cycling gear and pedal for 6 hours.  Instead, we had breakfast as a group, then say a few goodbyes and the rest of us loaded our stuff in a 20 seat bus and headed to the Inverness airport.  Some of the group were flying off to London, while Sherman, Michelle and I were picking up our Enterprise Rental car and heading 13 miles down the road to Nairn and The Boathouse House.  This is our reward for cycling 1,100 miles.  We hjust finished high tea and had a stroll through the spectacular gardens.  I've read that the Boathouse House is the finest B&B in all of Scotland.......it's pretty incredible.

Drinks at 6:30 tonight , then dinner at 7:30 in the farm/garden to table Michelin starred restaurant.  Tomorrow we head to Andy Murrays resort via Ft William to meet up with Stephen (and wife Barbara) and Rachael.
Best to all

Friday September 25

Today's ride from Inverness to Lairg of 56 miles got extended by 15 miles in order to shorten Saturday's final ride to John O'Groats (originally scheduled for 95 miles).  The ride was spectacular, riding through the country along the Dee river.  We experienced a few raindrops but escaped real rain.
Dinner at the Highland hotel with the hang.  One more day of cycling!

Saturday September 26, Final Day

Our final ride from Crask to John O'Groats didn't start out well.  We found ourselves in the midst of a swarm of Midges (small biting gnats).  The only way to get away from these pests was to cycle as quickly as possible.  The route to John O'Groats was 82 miles, starting out mostly flat then turning into big ups and downs and then finally more flats along the coast.  The weather was beautiful and we flew, covering the 82 miles at an average of almost 16 mph.!
We pulled into JOG around 4:30 after stoping for a wonderful lunch.  Pictures of  today's ride and finish.

Thursday September 24th

Today's 75 mile ride took us from Ballater to Inverness.  There's little doubt that today was one of the hardest days Michelle and I have ever experienced on our bikes.  We left our wonderful bed and breakfast at 9:00 am and was escorted out of town but our new friend David on his Penny Farling.  David owns a sports marketing company that was running a charity 100 mile bike ride this weekend.
So we started out and the first 10 miles were mild rolling hills through the countryside.  After 10 miles we started up and continued up for the next 8 miles.  These 8 miles were the steepest Michelle and I have ever experienced......steeper than Tuscony and steeper than the climbs in Majorca.  My garmin showed grades of 20% in some of the steepest sections.  I was able to do the climb without stopping and my Wonder Woman riding partner arrived at the summit a short time after I arrived.  After this Hugh climb we were still over 50 miles from tonight's home.  Ozzie, one of our leaders said the ride to Inverness was mostly flat......wrong!  Still more climbs but not as bad as this mornings ascents.
At about mile 30 we started to experience incredible head winds......I'd estimate gusts of well over 30 mph.  These lasted the balance of the ride..... Ugly!  There were some incredible down hills today where we reached speeds in excess of 40mph but the strong winds made these speeds feel uncomfortable.
Michelle pulled me in for the last 15 miles, my legs and other parts of my body were shot.  I continue to be amazed at the power Michelle generates on flats and mild grades....she smokes me!  We limped into Inverness around 4:30, took a shower and found a place to do our laundry.  We'll be clean for the final 2 days of the ride.  Here are some pictures from today's ride.  Enjoy!

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday brought us from Pebbles (Scotland) to Perth a distance of 70 miles (of course mostly up hill).  The highlight of the ride was crossing the Forth Bride over the Firth River.   We enjoyed a wonderful Italian meal, lots of carbs to get ready to tackle the hills on today's ride.
Today (Wednesday) was a ride of 68 miles.  It was one of the more challenging rides of the tour, but it was also one of the most beautiful.  The scenery though the Caringroms National Park was spectacular.  About 20 miles into the ride we started up and at mile 43 (with 3 miles of an 8-13% grade climb) we had lunch at the base of a ski area.  The ride down to Ballater was awesome....  We started out with an 8 mile downhill where we reached speeds in excess of 40mph.  After the downhill we rode through Balmoral (the summer home of the Royal family).  A trucker we met said to keep our eyes out for three Range Rovers as Charles was in the area hunting.  We reached Ballater at 3:30, showered and then roamed through the cute Scotish town.  We're currently in the Balmoral Bar having a Pint and watching the rugby match between Australia and Fiji.  People in Scotland take their drinking and rugby seriously.

Monday September 21 Talkin to Peebles

todays ride brought us into Scotland.  We've passed the 1/2 way point on our journey.  Today started off wet and after a 10 mile enjoyable ride the fun ended and it was mostly up hill for the final 69 miles, OK there were some great downhills thrown in along the way.  We covered 79 miles and climbed 4400 feet.  The ride took just under 6 hours at an average speed of just over 13 mph.  The sun came out this afternoon which made for a nice ride into Peebles, a wonderful little Scottish town.
We stopped for lunch at a Tibetan monistary and enjoyed homemade soup and sandwiches.  Off for dinner.  More later.

September 20th Sunday

Today's ride of 57 miles took us from Bolton to Talkin, just 12 miles from the Scotland border.  The day was beautiful, a good temperature and no rain.  More climbs but not as big or long as yesterday.  I have a feeling the entire trip, maybe with the exception of the final day will be filled with up and downs and very little flat terrain.  This is a tough ride!
Michelle continues to impress me with her power on the flats and reasonable grades (leaving me with a view of her blinking tail light) and tackling the steep 16% + grades on the climbs.  Tonight we're staying at the Blacksmiths Inn a lovely Pub with rooms.  We had a fine meal and an early evening getting ready for tomorrow ride (79 miles) to Pebbles a town not far from Edinburgh.
6 more days and about 450 miles to John O'Groats!
Best to all, michael, Michelle and Sherman

RECAP

Again, sorry for the delay in updating our progress as we make our way from Lands End to John O'Groats.  Here's a quick recap.
Our group consists of Michelle, Sherman Bull and me, Stephen Yates and Rachel Walter who we met on an Arizona cycling trip almost 2 years ago, Andy (a Brit), Susan (an Aussie) who now lives in London and Bob who is from Colorado.  Our leaders are petite Paul and tall Tom.

We started riding Sunday September 13th, leaving Lands End and heading for Bodmin some 74 miles away.  The weather was windy and the hills were steep but the rain held off for most of the day.  As we arrived at our destination (Westberry Hotel) the rain started and became heavier into the night.  The Westberry was not as nice as a Motel 6, only getting 2 stars.

Sept 14th started in the rain and progressively got worse.  Heavy rain, gale force winds and temperatures in the 40's.  You can look at the blog for day two and get a better idea of our trip to Brampton.  Day 2 was a brutal day (82 miles) that most of us were able to only ride 50 miles before hypothermia started to set in.  We finished the day in Tiverton at the Best Western.  The hotel had no laundry services to dry our wet gear but said the room heaters and towel racks would come on automatically at midnight.  They never did so we packed our wet riding gear hoping for laundry service at the next stop.

Sept 25th was a "recovery" day of 55 miles to wells.  The weather cooperated for most of the day which made the day quite pleasant.  The ride was relatively flat compared to day one and two.  We stayed at Number 23, a guest house outside the town of Wells.  Liz, the innkeeper was wonderful, making us feel right at home.  She made us tea and said included with the stay, she did our laundry!  Mother Teresa!  We had a wonderful night and had a great Italian meal in town.

September 16 was a long and hilly day of 85 miles to Hereford.  The highlight of the day was meeting up with 3 of our XC mates who drove hours to join us for dinner.  It was so special getting together with Geoffrey, Tim and Richard (and their wives for dinner at a "Proper Pub".

Sept 17 was another shorter distance day of 57 miles.  Again the weather cooperated but there were more big hills, especially at the end of the ride up to the hotel.  I've been having issues with my bike, whenever I climb or generally put load on the bike I get a screeching noise.  We found a great, high end shop in Ludlow that was kind enough to take a look.  They tightened the crank and after a few additional purchases we were underway.  Almost immediately the noise came back so we turned around and headed back to the shop.  Michelle was feeling tired so I suggested she continue on the 23 miles to the hotel which she did,  leaving me to get my bike repaired.  After two hours the problem was diagonased as a faulty rear cluster.. It was replaced and after 2 hours I was back on the road headed for the Telford Hotel and Golf Resort our home for the night.  Much of the remaining 23 miles was on small roads (more like paths) through georgeous farm country filled with cows and sheep.  As I rode along I had the worst feeling of what would happen if Michelle were to have a puncture (flat) while riding alone.  Because of a lack of cartledge she doesn't have the hand strength to change a tire.......just as I was thinking this, bam.....a flat rear tire.  I got my tire changed and headed on the final 13 miles to the hotel and of course, the hills getting to the hotel were huge.  Just as I was climbing the last hill the screeching came back!

Sept 18 on to Bolton (not far from Manchester) and 88 miles.  The day was long but the weather was generally good.  The ride felt good for Michelle and me until about 82 miles.  The last 6 miles were through heavy city traffic.  It felt like it took hours to finish the last 6 miles. We arrived at our home for the night, the Bolton Whites Hotel which is part of a sports complex where a major league "football" soccer team plays.  The accommodations were quite nice.

Sept 19th, today, was a 65 mile ride again through the beautiful countryside, but hills and more hills (steep hills).  We had a wonderful picnic lunch that Paul made for us at 45 miles.  When we asked about the last 20 miles he said it as a little "lumpy".  We headed out and after a mile or two we started up and up and up.....climbing at a grade between 6 - -2 percent for 6+ miles.  It was a bear of a climb they went on forever.  Michelle did an outstanding job tackling this beast without stopping.  We arrived at our destination, the Pheasant Inn around 4:00 pm.  This is the nicest place we've stayed so far....exactly what you'd think of when thinking of an old English inn.  Tonight's meal was spectacular.  Tomorrow we're on to Talkin.......almost to Scotland!!  Here are some pictures from our journey.

RIDING DAY 2

no pictures from today's ride.  We started out in the pouring rain with temperatures in the 40's.  The hills in the beginning of the ride were huge.......my garmin showed a grade of 19% on the steepest section!  When we stopped at the first SAG many of the riders were experiencing hypothermia and had too call it quits for the day.  Michelle and I added layers and moved on with a few other riders.  At mile 25 we found a pub that was spo welcoming, offering us hot tea and a place to dry our cloths (a reminder of my day riding into Kirksville on the XC ride).  We warmed up, changed our wet cloths and pushed on to lunch at mile 50 where we called it a day.  Tonight we're at a Best Western in Tiverton.  Tomorrow is a 60 mile day that seems to be a fairly flat ride into Wells.  So proud of Michelle's determination and grit pounding out the miles and climbing the big hills today.  We hoping for better weather tomorrow.

Best,

Riding Day 1

Well, we're about an hour away from ride time on day one.  From our room we can hear the wind gusting outside but no rain so far......I'm sure that will change.
Just like with the cross country ride we're a little nervous about what's ahead but I'm sure the adventure will be great.
Ok, we finished the 74 mile ride.  We climbed 6400 feet and defended 6300 feet.  Because the course was so hilly we were only able to manage 12 mph.  The day was very windy but the 4 letter word held off until late in the day🚲.
Here are some photos from today's ride.
